In Cognota, there are three ways to link a request to a project — two from the request side, and one from the project side.
Method | Where you start | Requirement |
Request | Request must be Approved
Request | Request must be Approved
Project | None — works regardless of request status |
Creating a project from the Projects tab directly? The project creation modal doesn't have a field for linking a request — you can't attach one during setup. Create the project first, then link the request afterward using Method 3.
1. Create a Project from an Approved Request
Use this when a request has been approved and no project exists for it yet. Cognota will pre-fill key project fields for you, so you don't have to enter the same information twice.
Navigate to Requests.
Open the request (it must have a status of Approved).
Go to the Linked Projects tab.
Click Create Project.
In the Create Project modal, review the pre-filled fields:
Project Name — copied from the request
Description — copied from the request
Business Unit — copied from the request
Priority — copied from the request (defaults to Medium if none was set)
Project Privacy — automatically set to Private
Complete the remaining fields: Project Template, Project Owners, Start Date & Target Completion Date, Process Used, Project Category, and Task Bundle.
Click Create Project to save and return to the request, or Create & Open to jump straight into the new project.
The request is automatically linked to the new project — you'll see it listed at the bottom of the project view, and the project will appear in the request's Linked Projects tab.
2. Link an Approved Request to an Existing Project
Use this when the project already exists (for example, it was set up independently or came from a different request) and you just need to connect the two.
Navigate to Requests.
Open the request (it must have a status of Approved).
Go to the Linked Projects tab.
Click Link Project.
Search for the project by name and select it.
The project now appears in the request's Linked Projects tab, and the request appears on the linked project.
3. Link a Request from the Project Side
Use this to manage all of a project's linked requests in one place — or to link a request that isn't Approved yet, since this method isn't restricted by request status.
Navigate to Projects and open the project.
Go to the Overview tab.
Scroll down to the Linked Requests section.
From here you can:
View all requests currently linked to the project
Add a request by searching for it and selecting it
Manage (unlink) any request that no longer belongs on the project
📌 Note: Linking from the project side works regardless of the request's status — In Review, Waitlisted, or Approved. This is the only method that doesn't require the request to be Approved first.
